FAQs

  • 3D/4D Ultrasound Questions
  • Is 3D/4D Ultrasound imaging safe?

Yes, ultrasound scans have been used with pregnant women for more than 30 years. 3D Ultrasound and 4D Ultrasound scans are not very different to 2D Ultrasound scans, only that the software component is advanced and allows you to see so much more whilst having the ultrasound. There are no studies to date that have shown these ultrasounds to be unsafe or harmful to a mother or their unborn child. It has now become a normal practice for mothers to have ultrasound scans throughout their pregnancy all around Australia. It's also quite common for people to have 3D Ultrasound scans as they wish to see more than what they can see on a 2D Ultrasound.

  • Do I need to prepare in any way for my scan?

No, you do not need to have a full bladder or anything of that nature for a 3D Ultrasound. We do suggest you are hydrated. You just come and enjoy the experience with your loved ones and get ready to meet your baby for the first time!

  • Are you able to tell the sex of the baby?

In most cases we will be able to provide you with an indication of the sex of your baby.
However, there are factors that can make it difficult to give you an indication such as the position of the baby, how far along you are in your pregnancy, amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby and so forth.
Fear not, we won’t give up easily! We may ask you to go for a little walk, drink a cold glass of water, and we will definitely try our utmost best to give you an introduction to your baby.
We will endeavour to give you an indication, however if your baby is not cooperating on that particular day, we will reschedule your appointment at no charge to you at all so that you can find out the sex of your baby and experience the first major discovery in your pregnancy.

  • Who can I bring with? How many people can I bring along?

Anybody you feel comfortable sharing this experience with. We suggest for the 3D Ultrasound and 4D Ultrasound, a maximum of 8 people so that everyone is seated comfortably, if you have any questions or special requests please mention this to us when making your booking.

  • I want the sex of my baby to remain a surprise, can I still have a 3D/4D Ultrasound session?

Yes! You can definitely enjoy the 3D Ultrasound / 4D Ultrasound session and a have the opportunity to bond with your little one, we will just focus the scan on the upper parts of your baby’s body.

  • Who will perform my scan?

Every session is performed by a technician who has been specifically trained in 3D Ultrasound /4D Ultrasound Imaging.

  • When is the optimal time to have the different scans 1st Discovery offer?

Your First Discovery – The optimal time for this is between 18 – 20 weeks.
The Next Discovery – The optimal time for this is from 25 weeks onwards.
The Ultra Discovery – Your first appointment can be anywhere from 18 weeks onwards. And for your 2nd appointment it is best to attend from 25 weeks gestation onwards.

  • Can I still have a scan if I am expecting twins?

Yes, You definitely can have a 3D Ultrasound and 4D Ultrasound, however, your scan may take a little longer and it may be difficult to see both babies properly depending on their positioning.

  • Do I need a doctor’s referral to be able to have a scan at 1st Discovery?

No referral is needed, as this is a non-diagnostic elective ultrasound.

  • Will I be able to claim a Medicare or private health fund rebate?

Unfortunately no. As these scans are for you and your family to enjoy and create lifetime memories with of your unborn baby, they are not diagnostic in nature and therefore do not attract a rebate.

  • How long will I have to wait for my photos/CD/DVD?

Not very long! While you have a seat in our waiting area with your family and friends and reflect on the amazing experience you all just had, and start comparing who your baby looks like we will prepare your beautiful photos and CD or DVD for you to take home.

  • When should I book my appointment with 1st Discovery?

As soon as possible, to avoid disappointment. Most 3D/4D Imaging Studios will ask you for a deposit up front however, we do not, so it is as easy as giving us a call on 9704 7699 and making a booking with our friendly staff. We only ask if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment that you call us and let us know.

  • Will this replace my doctor referred/diagnostic ultrasounds?

No. An appointment at 1st Discovery is an elective, non-diagnostic ultrasound and does not replace your diagnostic ultrasound. Mums who make an appointment at 1st Discovery must already be receiving treatment by a doctor, and must already have undergone at least one medical, diagnostic ultrasound ordered by their doctor to confirm their due date, screen for fetal anomalies and to look for any other pregnancy related issues.
